Mina Coutsoucos

Mina Coutsoucos, a recent LaGuardia Community College alumnus with an Associate in Science diploma, is currently enrolled in the Civil Engineering Undergraduate Program at The City College of New York. During her studies in LaGuardia, she participated in the 2021 CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP) and was awarded for her research on “Automating the Generation of Narrow Transmission Resonances of Matter Waves in Coupled Waveguides”. Additionally, she had been on the Dean’s List from Fall 2019 to Spring 2021 and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Her future plan is to become a licensed civil engineer, aspiring to participate in the design and construction of environmentally sustainable structures and urban systems. She is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of Women Engineers in The City College of New York.

Jason Alazraki

I grew up in San Diego, CA, and moved to New York City in 2005. A few years ago I decided to return to school and make a career change. I graduated from LaGuardia in the spring of 2021 and transferred to Hunter College in the fall where I'm currently majoring in Psychology with a focus on Neuroscience. When I graduate from Hunter I hope to move on to a Neuroscience Ph.D. program with the ultimate goal of working in research. I'm interested in memory consolidation and degradation. Specifically, cognitive memory disorders like Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and I hope to be able to play a small role in the advancement of preventative measures and treatments for these debilitating diseases.

Nour Mohsen

I am Nour Mohsen I was born and raised in Egypt, and I am studying industrial design technology at LaGuardia community college. Currently, this is my last semester in LaGuardia, I have been here since 2019. I am planning to transfer the next fall to a 4-year college studying industrial design technology. Right now I am more focused on building up my skills in CAD programs. I hope I will be able to earn my degree and jump into the competitive field of design. 

Ali Sayed

I was born and raised in Palestine and moved to the United States over 15 years ago.  I have a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership from Fordham University and am currently pursuing a second degree in Mechanical Engineering at the City College of NY. 

Edda Hobuss

Edda is a physical sciences student at LaGuardia Community College. She is currently the president of the Physics Club and a member of the President's Society. After graduating in Fall 2022 she plans to transfer to a four-year college and finish her studies in physics to later become a high school teacher. Passionate about science and science education, she wishes to make a difference in the lives of students by helping them find their passion, succeed in learning, and understand the importance of perseverance.

Sofia Canonge

Sofia Canonge is a senior at LaGuardia Community College, pursuing a degree in Liberal Arts, and Journalism. Born in 2001 in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and raised in Inwood, New York City. She is a member of the Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. In Fall 2022, she will be transferring to Brooklyn College to pursue her BS in Journalism and Media Studies. Her goal is to obtain her Master’s at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and become an influential Multimedia Journalist with a specialization in Literary Journalism.

Sanil Dave

Sanil Dave is a biology major at LaGuardia.  After graduating, he plans to attend a 4-year college to work on earning a bachelor’s in biology with a concentration in molecular biology. 

Mame Diarra B. Diokhane

I was born in Senegal and came to the United States back in 2019. I am currently enrolled in LaGuardia Community College for my Associate in Science degree and will be graduating in Spring 2022. I will be attending The City College of New York next semester. My goal is to become a civil engineer. Like any engineering field, civil engineering contributes to the development of better living conditions. I want to help build more sustainable infrastructures. In near future, I would also like to work in developing countries lacking infrastructures and assist in the design and construction processes of safe roads and buildings.

María Fonseca

María Fonseca was born in Managua, Nicaragua, raised in Queens, New York, and is currently a second-year Political Science student at LAGCC. As an ambassador to the President's Society Environment program, María has had an impact in the fight for environmental justice through advocacy and is playing a key role in securing the approval of the L.I.C. Greenway permanent plaza that will serve the L.I.C. community and improve the quality of campus life for students and faculty for many years to come. María strives for academic excellence and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) and a Dean’s List Scholar and is due to graduate at the end of Spring 2022. While still undecided about a senior college, María plans to attend a school with a pre-law program that will set her on the path to earning a law degree. Once a lawyer, María will endeavor to advocate for equal rights for immigrant and low-income communities.

Arhum Aamir

A first-generation Pakistani-American, Arhum grew up in Queens, NYC. His interest in developing technology compelled him to major in mechanical engineering. Impassioned in understanding his undiagnosed ADHD, he wrote a research paper on ADHD, which came in third place at LaGuardia's 40th Annual Library Research Review Competition. Furthermore, as an ambassador for President's Society Environment, he worked with other ambassadors and LaGuardia faculty to bring green spaces to the campus via a permanent plaza on 29th street; the plan received approval from the NYC Department of Transportation. After graduating from LaGuardia, Arhum intends to transfer to a four-year university to further his studies in mechanical engineering and aspires to become an engineer to create a positive impact for all.

Hyeyeong Lee

I was born and grew up in Korea and I came to the U.S. in 2015. I enrolled in LaGuardia Community College Fall 2020 and started in ESL Class. Currently, I’m majoring in Paralegal Studies and I’m a member of the President’s Society and Honors Program. It’s such an honor to publish my essay in The Honors Journal. It means a lot to me because for an ESL graduate, it is a big accomplishment. I’m expecting to graduate in June 2022. My career goal is to be a patent attorney. I got interested in intellectual property law while working as a scientific researcher. After graduation from LaGuardia, I want to be a professional IP legal assistant to gain experience in the law field and build a network. And I wish to proceed to law school to be an attorney.

Caitlin Lynch

Caitlin grew up near Portland, Oregon, and has been living in Brooklyn for 8 years. She previously earned a degree in Urban and Environmental Policy and returned to school at LaGuardia to pursue the natural sciences. She is currently researching bacterial diversity as an indicator of ecosystem health in estuary sediment through the CUNY Research Scholars program and supporting the restoration of Newtown Creek through the re-introduction of natural habitats.

 

After graduating from LaGuardia with a degree in Environmental Science later this year, she plans to find employment in the New York area in ecological conservation and restoration fieldwork. She is interested in ecological relationships from the micro to the macro level and exploring environmental solutions that consider the complex roles between species.

Kristen Hiu Chun Chan

Kristen Hiu Chun Chan was born in Hong Kong and moved to Queens, New York at the age of four where she has lived there ever since. She graduated from LaGuardia Community College in February 2022 where she earned an Associate in Applied Science with honors in Commercial Photography. While at LaGuardia, she was a part of the President's Society and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She is currently a student at CUNY Queens College, pursuing a bachelor's degree in hopes of becoming a UX Designer.

Sangae C. Dorji

Sangae is a Human Services: Mental Health student and an active member of the Honors Student Advisory Committee at LaGuardia Community College. She was accepted as a fellow in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program at LaGuardia Community College during the Spring 2022 Cohort. After graduating this Spring, she intends to pursue her Bachelor’s in Social Work from Lehman College and move forward to attain her Master's in Social Work from Columbia University School of Social Work. After obtaining her License in Clinical Social Work she hopes to open her own small business and take part in Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses. 

Alvi Akthar 

Alvi Akthar is an ECE student at LaGuardia Community College, graduating in the Fall of 2022. She was born and raised in Bangladesh and moved to New York in 2020. On behalf of LaGuardia Community College, she has participated in the “2022 CUNY Education Conference: Innovative Practices in Preparing Educators Across CUNY, New York, NY”. After graduating, she plans to transfer to a four-year college to get her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. She wants to work as a Preschool Teacher until she gets her MS  Degree in Speech-Language Pathology to become a Speech Pathologist for preschoolers.
